How to Watch: Shaman King (2001) Anime

With the new Shaman King (2021) anime now streaming on Netflix you may want to have jolt of nostalgia and watch the original Shaman King anime from 2001. Below are all the ways you can legally watch the original anime series in 2021.

English


English Dub

English 4Kids Dub Blu-Ray

Discotek Media will be releasing all 64 episodes in Standard Definition on Blu-Ray on October 26, 2021. This will be a Region A encoded Blu-Ray release and has newly created closed captioning. The video will use the original 4Kids International video source which was modified from the Japanese video. This includes several video edits to both the content as well as some minor changes to the timing of the episodes (to be more suited for TV broadcast). The audio will use the original 4Kids English audio dub from 2003. The “Uncut” English audio dub will only be on Discotek Media’s upcoming English subtitle release of the series.

The Blu-Ray set will have a MSRP of $59.95 USD and can be pre-ordered from retailers such as RightStuf.


English Subtitles (with Japanese audio)

Currently the series has been licensed by Discotek Media for a physical home release. They are first releasing the English 4Kids dub on Blu-Ray and have plans for a Japanese Audio release that will likely come out in 2022. They are creating a brand new English subtitle track for it and will include the “Uncut” English audio for the first 6 episodes that was previously released. The release will be on Blu-Ray and likely use the recent upscale created for Japanese streaming in 2019 while still maintaining the original 4:3 aspect ratio.



Japanese (No Subtitles)

Currently the series has a very limited release in Japan. With the start of the Shaman King (2021) anime, was removed from many services but has since returned for all 64 episodes to be available for streaming or purchase. The first episode is available for free on YouTube:

French Dub

All 64 episodes of the Shaman King (2001) anime are currently streaming on ADN (Anime Digital Network) with the original French dub. This is based on the 4Kids international video release and is only in standard definition (480p).

Currently the first episode is free and the remaining episodes require an active subscription in order to view. The service does have region blocking in place.


French Subtitles

Spanish Dub (Latin American)

All 64 episodes form the original Latin American Spanish dub are currently available for streaming on Tubi TV for free. Some ads may play and there is no region blocking (where Tubi TV is available). The video is based on the original Japanese 2001 release with some Spanish subtitles embedded as part of the video for the opening and ending.

Vix is only streaming the first 13 episodes of the Latin American Spanish dub on-demand. The video is based on the original Japanese 2001 release with some Spanish subtitles embedded as part of the video for the opening and ending.

Pluto TV is also streaming all 64 episodes the Latin American Spanish dub on-demand and as part it it’s linear broadcast channels. Region blocking is in place for these videos.

Amazon Prime Video is also streaming all 64 episodes of the original Latin American Spanish dub. An optional Brazilian-Portuguese audio track is also available. Region blocking is in place for these videos.

There is no current releases which contain the original Japanese audio with Spanish subtitles.



Chinese


Chinese Dub

Available from Ani-Gamer in Taiwan, all 64 episodes of the Shaman King (2001) anime can be streamed on the service. This was licensed by Muse who did the original dub.
