Kotodaman x Shaman King Mobile Game Collaboration Overview

Starting on back on March 31^st and continuing until June 14^th at 15:59, the Japanese mobile game “Kotodaman” is having a collaboration event with the Shaman King (2021) anime series. This is the first time Shaman King has collaborated with this game, and this is the first mobile game which is using the voice cast from the 2021 anime.

Kotodaman Gameplay

The Kotodaman is a Japanese word-puzzle based game where you use your team of characters to form words which are used as attacks. Each character on your team is represented by a Hiragana and Katakana and you rotate through your team as you use each character. The character’s design also integrates their representative Hiragana and Katakana into their artwork. Many of the characters have different powers as well as elemental affiliations. Using the elements along with the powers can help increase your attack strength or provide other benefits. Some characters can also evolve into stronger versions too.

When attacking the enemy you can increase the damage being done by performing combos. Within the word formed with your characters you can also gain bonuses for other words within them. In English, for example, if you used the word “island”, it would be a combo of 4 for forming “is”, “and”, “land”, and “island.” Within the collaboration modes, there is also a set of special words that if they are used provide additional bonuses.

When playing against strong characters they can also have special abilities or “gimmicks” which can disrupt your placement of your characters to form words. The following is a short promotional trailer for the base game which shows off some of these gameplay mechanics.

Collaboration Game Modes

In addition to the core game with Kotodaman, the collaboration brings some limited time game modes as well.

Collaboration Advent Quests

These will be available throughout the collaboration event. Within them you fight against several opponents and have the chance of winning the characters Marco, Silva, or Jun along with other rewards. These Shaman King characters can only be won via this event. These quests are broken down into the following sub-categories:

• Marco Advent [Magic Class]
• Silva Advent [Super Class]
• Tao Jun Advent [Intermediate]
• Tao Jun Advent [Advanced]

Iron Maiden Jeanne Assault Event

This event will appear at random after completing other in-game Collaboration Advent Quests. Additionally you can join other players online with this event to increase your rewards. Within this event is the only way to unlock Iron Maiden Jeanne.

Let’s Challenge Hao! Event

This is the most challenging event in the collaboration. To battle against Hao you need to collect the “Futsunomitama no Tsurugi” items which can be dropped as rewards in the Collaboration Advent Quests. Within this mode there are 2 different levels of Hao you can battle against:

• Hao [Magic Class]
• Hao [Ruin Class]

By completing these events you can unlock Hao along with additional items to strengthen that character.

Shaman King Test & Quiz Quests

Unlike the standard gameplay, this is a special mode with different rules where you answer trivia questions about Shaman King. For all of your characters, you get the full access to all the Hiragana and Katakana to give your answer. You have 1 minute to answer each of the questions. This mode is also broken down into several variants:

• Collaboration Quiz Quest [Alone] – 5 Questions
• Collaboration Quiz Quest [Multiplayer] – 5 Questions
• Collaboration Test Quest [Alone] – 10 Questions

For these trivia questions there are total pool of 80 questions. More difficult questions can also have a hint where they fill in portion of the answer. The quiz topics range from questions in the on-going anime as well as topics about the manga series (up until volume 21 or so). By completing the quiz you can unlock items that you can exchange for additional powerups. You can also post your results of the quiz on Twitter to be entered into a contest as well.

Collaboration Characters

In addition to unlocking characters via the in-game quests and events, there is also a gatcha to randomly pull for characters. A free pull with a guarantee for a Shaman King character is given to all players who log in during the collaboration time period. In-game currency can be earned to pull this special gatcha or real-world money can be used to purchase the in-game currency.

Some characters have both an evolution as well as an additional transformation. You can merge multiple copies of a character together to increase their level and allow them to evolve. There are also special items that can be applied to characters to increase their skills.

All of the characters who have appeared in the Shaman King (2021) anime with speaking lines prior to June 2021 have their same voice actors with some spoken lines within this collaboration event. Only “Iron Maiden Jeanne” and “Marco” remain silent.

In addition to the playable characters, there are in-game stamps that can be used for the chat which feature Shaman King characters. A pack containing 5 of these characters (Yoh, Ren, Anna, Manta, and Hao) can be purchased for 250 yen and comes with 100x Rainbow Kotodamas.

There are also daily “homework” challenges that can be completed. One of these daily challenges is to complete the trivia quiz quest once with other players online. This will unlock the Ryu stamp for your in-game chat.
