After delays due to COVID-19, the Shaman King Exhibition in Kyoto has finally taken place. The event runs from February 17th through February 28th at the Daimaru Museum on the 6th floor in Kyoto. Currently there are no more Exhibitions planned. Additional information can also be found at the official website.

Some of the artwork shown at the Shaman King Exhibition Kyoto Venue contains spoilers for up to Shaman King: The Super Star chapter 33 and Shaman King: Marcos volume 3.

New Key Art

For this exhibition, Hiroyuki Takei drew a new Hao artwork to be used as the main design for the Exhibition in Kyoto. Along with this drawing the logo was changed to a more traditional hand-painted design. Within the story of Shaman King, Hao lived in Kyoto during his first life, which is why he is the focus of this new exhibition.

Shaman King The Super Star Area

This portion of the exhibit has been expanded upon from the previous exhibitions. In includes large replica prints of all 5 of the currently published volume covers along with new illustrations. Two new drawings of Gandara and Boy Angel Marco were drawn by Hiroyuki Takei are also on display. Additionally a full drawing of the Lucifer from the cover of Shaman King: Marcos volume 3 is also on display.

Hiroyuki Takei had also re-colored some of his character designs from Shaman King: Flowers which were then on display as large cardboard cutouts. Ponti & Conti also had new drawings which were also on display as life-size cardboard standees.

In addition to these new drawings, Hiroyuki Takei also drew new chibi designs for Yohsuke, Patch Girl, Zero Fighter Man, Black Maiden, and Matamune.

All of these new drawings listed are also available as new products at the shop.

Located with some of Hiroyuki Takei’s model references for various Shaman King items, a new prop mock-up was also on display. From Shaman King: The Super Star volume 5, there is a reference to the model kit “Jomon Warrior Dogu” in the “Let’s Import Culture! Campaign ’85” packaging. This is a parody of early Gundam model kits.

Additionally, there is a new drawing of Yakumo Nakaizumi, which was introduced in Shaman King: The Super Star chapter 33. This new color drawing is on display as a cardboard standee with the speech bubble saying “Welcome to the inn!” He is the Inn/Shrine Keeper where Hana and gang are staying while in Kyoto. This chapter where he is introduced will be included in the upcoming Shaman King: The Super Star volume 6, which is expected to release sometime in 2022.

Celebration Flowers

As part of the opening for the Exhibition, fans across Japan sent celebration flowers to be set on display.

Online Fan Meet-up

During the evening before the opening of the Exhibition, an online fan-meetup was streamed on YouTube. The meet-up was hosted by Hiroyuki Takei’s manga editor, Moriyoshi Yoshida. The stream was only live and not recorded.

The online meet-up started with a quick video tour of the Exhibition hall space. Next it moved into a demo of the new goods available for sale at the Exhibition and the collaborations with the hotels and café. The majority of the meet-up was then spent on answering fan-submitted questions. All of the questions were submitted in advance via a Google Form (in Japanese only). For each question asked, they also received a small item that would be mailed to them later. Within one of the questions asked, Moriyoshi responded that Hiroyuki Takei is doing well and that Shaman King: The Super Star will return soon.

The online meet-up ended with the reminder for the upcoming Shaman King Blu-Ray box set 3 that would go on sale later in February.

Collaboration Treats

Located at the café near the Exhibition venue, Narumi-mochi honten has created a Funbari Onsen and Matamune mochi snack that can be purchased. Due to high demands, only one person can be purchased of each. The Funbari Onsen design costs 270 yen and the Matamune one costs 302 yen.

New Goods

Currently the Shaman King Exhibition goods can only be purchased in-person. However, it was announced during the Online Fan-Meetup that the goods will be available for online pre-order at a later date in Japan.
